Basics Of Homemade Hamburger Helper PDF Print E-mail
Reasonable Recipes

Hamburger helper has been a staple in homes for 30 years.  You can have a better tasting, healthier and thrifty alternative by making it yourself.  Homemade alternatives are easy to make.  There are four basic ingredients that go into any hamburger recipe.  First, you need hamburger.  Most recipes call for one pound of hamburger.  Next you need a dairy.  Third a starch or vegetables.  Finally, you need spices.  Here are the four ingredients with variations to choose from.

Meat – typically hamburger, alternatives could be turkey or even venison.
Dairy – often sour cream is used but this could be milk, powdered milk, powdered sour cream, sour cream, cheese or even a can of “cream of” soup or corn chowder.
Starch – often noodles but you can use macaroni, rice, potatoes or even replace the starch with vegetables.
Spice – here you will find dozens of variations from chilly powder to garlic, onions, mushrooms, Italian seasonings, salt, pepper - you name it!

Here are several recipes to look through:

2 tbsp. butter

1/2 cup chopped onion

3 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 lb. mushrooms, sliced

1 lb. ground beef

1 can (10 3/4 oz.) cream of celery soup (do not add water)

1/2 tsp. dill weed

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. paprika

Pinch of pepper

1 cup sour cream

1 pkg. (8 oz.) wide egg noodles cooked

Saute onion and garlic in melted butter. When tender, add mushrooms. Remove ingredients leaving the butter - then brown the beef. Drain. Place all cooked ingredients into the pan.

Add seasonings and simmer for 5 minutes, stir occasionally.

Add sour cream and cook until completely heated. Serve over egg noodles.

HAMBURGER HELPER with Chili Powder

1 lb. ground meat

2 c. egg noodles

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tsp. chili powder

2 cups water

1 can tomato sauce

Brown meat and drain.

Add salt and pepper, chili powder, tomato sauce and water.

Add uncooked noodles and cover, stirring occasionally.

Cook for about 20 minutes.

Have fun creating and saving money!
